Fort Jesus in Mombasa, Kenya was built is 1593-1596 by the Portuguese, as an early attempt of colonization in East Africa. Local leaders in Mombasa sought support from Omani Arab authority to expel Portuguese from Mombasa who captured Fort Jesus after about three years of battle with the Portuguese. Between the year 1895 and 1968 the government converted it to a prison. Later in 1960, A Museum was built and the Fort was opened to the public as an historical monument.
