The twentieth "June 30” prayer meeting by Yeung Kwan
June 30, 2017 marks the twentieth "June 30" since the handover of Hong Kong, from a British rule colony to a city under the communist Chinese. To remember this historical moment, around two hundred Christians gathered for a prayer meeting at the former Legislative Council Building.
Twenty ago at the handover, the democratic lawmakers, who gained their seats through democratic election, were kicked out of the legislature. And around the midnight of the handover evening twenty years ago, on the balcony of this former Legislative Council building, the democrats swore to return.
And twenty years later, this group of Christians picked this location for their prayer meeting, not by coincidence, but aimed to remind attendees what happened twenty ago, and to reflect on the happenings of the past twenty years. They treasure the core values of Hong Kong, many of which have been gradually undermined with varying degrees: democracy, rule of law, freedom of press and speech, integrity of the administration, openness of education, environmental friendliness... and the list runs long.
The prayer meeting was divided into three parts: the past, the present, and the future. A few speakers were invited to share as well as leading in prayers. They also screened a short video, "Our Ten Years" hoping to provoke thoughts and imaginations for the future Hong Kong.
The prayer meeting began at 10pm, went smoothly and lasted for around two and a half hour, ended at around 12:30am of July 1, 2017.
